Lela Hobby, from the University of West Florida, published “A Direct Community Clinical Experience to Promote a Community Population’s Walkway Safety” on our innovative teaching strategies page. The teaching strategy focuses on several sub-competencies in the population health and interprofessional partnerships domains.
The clinical experience takes approximately 15 hours to complete and includes using a toolkit from the American Association of Retired People to audit the walkability of a neighborhood for seniors (although the tool can be used for any age group). During the experience, students conduct a windshield survey, talk to key informants, and develop an “elevator speech” to influence policy makers about improvements needed in the neighborhood.
